I don't listen to albums all the way through as much as I used to.
One of the few that I do regularly do that with is American IV: The Man Comes Around.
15 songs, almost all about death, love lost or both and yet still somehow uplifting. It's an album that could probably only have been recorded by a man who had just lost his wife/life partner and knew his own death was imminent.
Wonderful stuff.

The Closing Medley at San Quentin is just brilliant.
Standard of musicians, no fancy equipment and the atmosphere of the prison setting- top stuff.

Sure, they're Trent Reznor's but Cash made that song his own as Reznor freely admitted. 'Hurt' done by Cash is sublime.

' Every word he sang is full of pain and longing which is why 'Hurt' works so well. You can hear how much he wants to die and be in heaven with June'
I personally can never fully immerse like that when the words are not originally from the singers own mind.

I like most of what I've heard, especially the last few albums where he covered some then comtemporary artists, but I'm more a Woody Guthrie man.

I absolutely love Johnny Cash.
When I was a kid my paddy Pal's parents (who were pikey cunts) loved him so naturally I hated everything they liked. So I chucked him in the mental bin with Elvis Presley (who I still don't like).
Live at Folsom Prison is one of the greatest live albums of all time and right through his career he came up with fantastic songs. Great lyrics too. Stuff like fighting his dad in 'A Boy Named Sue' with 'well I've fought bigger, harder men, I just can't quite remember when. He kicked like a mule and bit like a crocodile '.
The real genius of the man was the stuff he recorded in the ten months after his wife, June Carter Cash, died. Every word he sang is full of pain and longing which is why 'Hurt' works so well. You can hear how much he wants to die and be in heaven with June. Songs like 'When the man comes around' almost dare you NOT to believe in God- even a cynical Godless bastard like me.
